Nine colour combinations that work in Indian daylight

Shade cards are lit by showroom LEDs. These pairings were chosen on real NCR walls, at 3 PM, with the curtains open.

The single most common regret we hear is "it looked different in the shop". Indian daylight is warm and very bright, and it pushes almost every colour a step yellower than the card suggests.

Rules that keep you out of trouble

  • Paint a 2ft × 2ft patch on the actual wall and look at it at three times of day before deciding.
  • Keep ceilings a half-shade lighter than the walls, never pure white next to a warm wall.
  • Pick one accent wall per room. Two accent walls is just a second main colour.

Nine pairings we keep coming back to

  1. 1.Oat + burnt terracotta — warm, forgiving, brilliant in west-facing living rooms.
  2. 2.Sage + cream — calm bedrooms; sage stays green in NCR light where mint turns grey.
  3. 3.Charcoal + brass accents — for double-height walls that can carry the weight.
  4. 4.Warm white + walnut woodwork — the safest upgrade to a rental flat.
  5. 5.Clay pink + off-white — reads adult, not childish, if you keep it desaturated.
  6. 6.Deep teal + oak — study and home-office walls; hides scuffs remarkably well.
  7. 7.Sand + soft black frames — pairs perfectly with black-framed glass partitions.
  8. 8.Ivory + olive — dining rooms, especially under warm pendant lights.
  9. 9.Mist grey + mustard accent — the one combination that survives changing furniture.

Where to spend the extra money

On the accent wall. A luxury emulsion or a hand-troweled texture on 100 sq.ft. costs very little in absolute terms and does more for a room than upgrading every wall by one tier.
